A home for a friend

Designing a house for one’s friends is both easy and difficult. On one hand, you are allowed to take more liberties than with an ordinary client, and you also know a great lot about the future master and therefore are able to foresee many things and design an interior your friend would truly enjoy living in. On the other hand, the sense of responsibility is as strong as ever, as you know you’ll visit here a lot in the future, and, obviously, wish to hear only joyful thanks during such visits. The master of this glulam house, an Eastern man not unconnected with the music industry, wanted a rich-looking interior in the Eastern tradition, which, to us, seemed incompatible neither with the architecture, nor with the building material of the house. In the end the master let us mess around a bit, and together we found a peculiar compromise. There are valuable specimens of wood and onyx, and icons in the bedchamber, but overall the interior is neither heavy nor ridiculous but playful. As for the Eastern motives, we left them for the guestrooms.
